Cold Storage Integrated, LLC (CSI) was a leading third-party provider of temperature-controlled supply chain management, distribution and logistics services throughout North America (purchased by Atlas and P&O Cold Storage from ProLogis in 2002). Operating distribution centers coast-to-coast, CSI's customer base included food processors and manufacturers, brokers, wholesalers and retailers serving the supermarket and foodservice communities. CSI recognized the need for more end-to-end logistics services and made the decision to include more robust supply chain management application software offerings. TranSystems | ESYNC was engaged to design and develop custom Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and Labor Management Systems (LMS), manage the implementation of WMS and LMS at the pilot site as well as conduct testing, training, facility preparation, data conversion and startup support activities, design and develop the integration strategy to existing systems; develop the rollout strategy and lead the WMS and LMS roll-outs at several sites; and develop a strategic facility design for an internet based customer of CSI.

Project challenges included an aggressive implementation schedule (11 months from kick off to pilot site implementation) and design of a solution that would satisfy the requirements of CSI’s business units (dedicated warehousing, multi-client and e-commerce business-to-business and business-to-consumer) and could be easily tailored to quickly satisfy existing and new customers’ needs and provide CSI with a competitive advantage.

The solutions developed by TranSystems | ESYNC included an integrated project and resource plan to manage the design, development and pilot site implementation activities as well as more accurately determine the overall costs; project management guidelines and communication to all project team members; functional, technical and integration specifications; and development of the WMS and LMS solution and implementation assistance at several sites.

The project gains, in addition to CSI having a flexible solution to support future customer requirements, were a 10% to 25% increase in productivity for each distribution facility.
